Y+K ARCHITECTS / THOMASHOFF & PARTNER ARCHITECTS / WITOPWIT [WOW]

While you were still running through sprinklers haasbek*, Karlien Thomashoff already qualified as an architect, worked locally and overseas, got chosen as a finalist for further studies in Rome and registered as a professional architect, all by 1998.

She’s a member of DOCOMOMO and, although preserving the historic built environment is her thing, there is nothing yesteryear about this lady. Take conservation, add a dash of innovation and BOOM! We’ve got sustainability. Karlien has been a key member on project teams chosen as finalists in significant local design competitions and is regarded as a specialist in product design, refurbishments, furniture design, retail interiors, sports facilities and restoration. Since 2005 she has been a partner in three leading companies with diverse objectives, and in 2006 her practice, in association with Matthews and Associates, was awarded a national Award of Merit by SAIA for the Diamond Hill Toll Plaza. Just last year, she was nominated for the Absolut VISI Designer of the Year Awards.

Now if you, ex-sprinkler-athlete, happen to currently be an Archi student at Tuks, TUT or Wits, picture her in an Arne Jacobson egg-chair, marking your attempt at greatness, then weep while you realise how much you still have to do to get where she’s at.
