FOUNDER / DESIGNER – DOKTRINE / SKIMGROT / DIE MOEDERSKIP

Johannes Mans du Preez’s mother didn’t like the idea of calling her son J.M. because “J.M.-tjie” just didn’t have the Afrikaans ring “M.J.-tjie” had.

Years later, M.J is the founder of a small, yet radical, Pretoria-based design company called Doktrine, an Afrikaans name that represents everything it doesn’t stand for. He calls it “a tribute to doing what you want to, as opposed to doing what you have to.” We call it taking to your mother’s side of the family.

Now, if you have never seen a Doktrine poster or flyer, you need to get out. No, seriously. Get out more. Doktrine specialises in everything involving design, photography, illustration and film and has been gracing the posters and walls of major events done in association with Griet, Hotbox and Arcade Empire. Most recently, he’s been responsible for projects like Die Moederskip, Die Skim Grot and Die Pretoria Sport Snor Wolwe Sport Klub vir Sport.

M.J is an armchair activist who fights for and embraces “the underdog” that is Pretoria. He is a self-proclaimed over-user of the colour pink, a jack of most design trades and master of fun.

If we confused you earlier, just call him Spookwolf. He’d like that.
